Workplace Proposed Plans for CC-ED

When beginning this project, my group, J.A.N, got together and picked out a 30'x30' area of space we wanted to design our workspace around. From there we measured and drew out the floor space on a 30"x30" sheet of paper. (1"=1')

Afterward, we worked on a program detailing activities, supplies and facilities the people working in the space may need to be productive. This was updated 3 times throughout the course of this project, each time adding or subtracting items and ideas that we felt would make the space more functional for the needs it needed to meet.
This is a snapshot of the 3rd iteration of the program created for the space.
From there our group began brainstorming ideas about pieces of furniture that may need to be used in the space, placement and other types of fixtures and details. To show this thought process we did multiple 3D sketch views of thoughts and presented our ideas to each other to figure out what we collectively thought would work well with the space.
The following images are all 3D sketch views I personally drew for the project:

These images consist of the first two iterations of sketch views done for our group as we progressed with ideas.
-The top image shows a storage unit I'd imaged would fit well within the space. It would take up minimal real estate yet have the capacity to hold large amounts of small loose items that may be needed by workers within the space (i.e. markers, paper, pens, pencils, etc.).
-The bottom left image illustrates a partition I thought would be useful within the space to create privacy between desks/workers, yet be low enough to allow for collaboration without needing to get up/move to talk to the person. Also the partition would double as pin up space as it would fold up allowing for a wall that could be used for presentations.
-The bottom middle image shows possible window coverings that could double as a projector screen allowing for less real estate space being used and a money saving option as the item would be dual purpose. Although, through the iteration process within the space, this idea slowly faded away and a drop down projector screen was added.
-The last image was the second iteration done for the group project after the discussion we had had within our group and the first preliminary floor plan had been drawn up. It shows the hallway leading to the employee lounge/break area and a small seating area in the formal conference area we had originally thought up but was later eliminated.
After the first few iteration of 3d sketch views had been worked through within our group we began working on possible floor plans for the space.
Below are the first two iterations of the space I created:
The top floor plan was proposed for the original workspace we had chosen to use on the 3rd floor of the Gatewood building (it was the center east side of the building). I prosed building a wall on the north side of the plan but after discussions with the group and professors it was noted that it was impractical and a huge potential waste of funds when not 40' north there existed a wall already. It was also noted that an informal conference room would be more functional than a formal conference room as that too already existed on the 3rd floor of the Gatewood building. Also the idea of building a sink for the employee lounge/break room would "eat" up a lot of money, and it wasn't an item that needed to absolutely be there.
From there the second floor plan/iteration was created. As a group we decided it would be beneficial to push the floor plan back to the existing wall, instead of proposing that one be built to save money for other ideas within the space. An informal conference space was created for the employees to converse with each other about projects/ideas as well as potential clients. The space used for the formal conference space in the previous floor plan was adapted into a lockable workspace for the employees to work on and leave projects in over night without needing to worry about its well-being while they are away from work. And, the lounge/break room was taken out for practical reasons. After speaking with the group/professors about this floor plan it was brought up that the space felt too practical/boring to help promote a feeling of creativity while working within the space.
Below is a proposed floor plan created by Ashley Wilder, a team mate in team J.A.N: 

This plan proposed using our original space (center east side of the Gatewood building on the 3rd floor). When creating this, Ashley focused on being able to create a large workspace/conference area out of the workers desks. (they would be pushed together, as illustrated with the hidden lines). She too included a small break area/lounge for the employees, an idea that would be ruled out as the floor plan/workspace iterations continued within our group.

Sketch models were also created to go with the concept ideas behind our first floor plan iteration. (Our concept was flexibility, layers and unique).

In creating this I focused a lot of my attention on the words for the concept vs. relating it to the physical workspace. This guy here, called a Dalek, is made with yarn, crocheted together using multiple layers to achieve its finished texture and appearance. It is very flexible as its made of a textile material, resulting in a bendable, pliable strength. It is also unique in the idea that if I made 10 of these by hand they would all be different in one way or another, as human hand created crafts are never 100% perfect, there will always be small differentiations that the artisan will most likely notice and know but others may not see.  
Below are images of the sketch models created by Nikolai and James for the first work space floor plan iterations:

 -The top image was created by Nikolai out of a Starbucks can. He too focused on the words of the concept vs. the physical room. He related the layers to the multiple bends and wrappings of the can cuts around the perimeter of the piece. The object was extremely flexible and when pushed from the top (the bottle cap) and released it would spring back like a trampoline. He also felt that it was unique in the light that is was created by hand and could not be duplicated exactly every time if more were created.
-The bottom image shows the sketch model created by James. James decided to focus on the workspace and how the concept words could be related to the area. He felt that the ball within the jar illustrated flexibility in that it moved around freely but was still constrained by the outer glass walls. Which he felt related to the space in that the furniture/fixtures could move around and be changed and used for different purposes within the space illustrating flexibility yet you were still constrained to the confines of the overall space. He also felt the ball and outer glass illustrated layers for more obvious reasons. And it was unique in that the idea behind it was original.  
From here we did some precedent studies involving pieces we thought would work well within the space and did 10 more rendered 3D sketch views to help support our ideas on the most recent floor plan ideas at the time; while incorporating those ideas.  
The following images are 3D sketch views I did after the critiques and discussions we had within our group and with the professors regarding the second floor plan iteration:
When drawing out potential ideas for the 3D sketch views, I tried to tie in personality traits from our group members as well as possible fun aspects to help make the space more creative and fun to work and be in. I also focused on details like the chair rail height wood border around the room and possible color schemes.
-The skateboard idea was proposed to incorporate James and Nikolai's love of skateboarding, while the yarn/textile installations above the hammock, the hammock itself and the CC-ED signage was inspired for my love of yarn and textiles.
-The idea of including a bouldering wall was also proposed and agreed upon within the group as a good idea to add a bit of a fun whimsy attitude to the space, so further precedent studies occurred for that feature. (Shown below):

From there, our group worked on our first proposed floor plan for the informal pin up in class.

This is the overall floor plan created illustrating the walls and fixed pieces within the room.
From there I worked on the overall dimensions of the space to further help anyone looking at the floor plans get an idea of overall scale.
Lastly I worked on furniture placement and how that would play into the space, trying to focus on the best possible arrangement to promote flexibility and movability.
After these three plans were drawn up the group got together to discuss the circulation and rendered plan (what color scheme we wanted to try and go for) in order to prepare for the upcoming informal pin up.

Also, each member completed 2 rendered 3D sketch's for the informal pin up relating to the proposed floor plan shown above. (We drew what it would be like to be in the room).

This illustration shows the corner of the space by the informal conference table where the logo is displayed.

After the informal pin up and critique in class our group went back to the drawing board to fix the issues that were brought up about the space. After working a week on the updates we were ready for the formal pin up:

 The top three images are of the original floor plan with modifications that had been made to improve the space. The bottom two images are of phase two, a possible renovation that may occur if the firm expanded in the future.

 The image above shows the dimensions of the space as well as the floor plan furniture arrangement, the rendering (suggesting the proposed color scheme) and the circulation that may occur within the space.
 Above is the same floor plan with the dimension layer removed so that the rendering, circulation and furniture placement is more visible.
-The idea behind phase two is that the firm has become more successful and needs to expand in both space and employee workers. The same elements are used in phase two as they were used in phase one but more furniture pieces have been added to accommodate the workers needs.
From there we each drew 2 more 3D sketch views for the final proposed floor plan (phase one):
-The top two images were done by Nikolai followed by Ashley Wilder then James Heusen and lastly the two images drawn by myself.

 This space illustrates again the hammock placement below the column encasement as well as the yarn signage installation showing the logo.
This illustration shows the desks that would be used within the space as well as the corner on the opposite side of the hammock installation.
After completing the project and looking back I feel like I enjoyed the iteration process and figuring out the fine line between practical and impractical. I learned a lot while working throughout this project dealing with what an average worker would need in order to be a productive employee in the space and how to incorporate that into the area. As well as placement and spacing-what is too much space, or too little between objects.
